TREND: Nail Polish Hues for Spring

TREND: Nail Polish Hues for Spring

Despite the crazy Toronto weather where it’s sunny & 24°C one day to hailing & 2°C the next day, spring is still in effect.  To make the day seem a bit brighter and more cheerful, I like to paint my nails in colours inspired by spring.

Note: All of the polishes mentioned are easily accessible and can be found at drugstores.  All swatches are done without base or top coat to accurately show you the sheen of the polish.

Pale Nails
Harpers Bazaar reported that pale nails were seen numerous times in this season’s runway shows.  So naturally it is part of the spring trend.
My favourite  is In a NYC Minute Quick Dry Nail Polish in Prospect Park Bloom ($1.99CAD) which is described as a pale pink.  The first layer is sheer and doesn’t streak, so it great for those that don’t want too much colour or like to do French manicures.  To get full opacity, 4 layers is needed.  But this isn’t a hassle at all, because the nail polish is quick drying!  Props to NYC for making thicker brushes as it allows novices like me, to apply nail polish quickly with minimal streaks and errors.

Bright Nails
When I think of spring, I think of magenta, corals, and turquoise.  You can definitely see these colours reflected in a lot of clothes.
In a NYC Minute Quick Dry Nail Polish in Midtown ($1.99CAD) is a bright magenta with a metallic sheen.  It’s easily opaque in 2 thin coats.  Plus, it’s cheap & dries quickly.  What more do you want in a polish?

If you’re into the matte trend, let me introduce you to Ceramic Glaze in Exotic Dragon Fruit ($11CAD).  It’s an exclusive brand to Shoppers Drug Mart, 3-free, and dries in the matter of seconds.  The formula is very thin but opaque in 2 coats.  Dragon Fruit is described as a hot neon pink.  To show the difference between matte and glossy, I applied top coat to my fourth finger only.

I am in love with corals and depending on the lighting, L’Oreal in Orange You Jealous? ($6.99CAD) shows either more pink or orange.  Within 3 coats, the crème finish on this polish shows beautifully.  Like New York Color, L’Oreal also uses a thicker brush which makes applying this polish a breeze.

For those that aren’t into colours in the pink family, let me introduce you to Essie in Turquoise & Caicos ($8).  As the name suggests, it is a turquoise green crème and fully opaque in 3 coats.
