Shangri-La - Hammam 1

It’s time to show off some skin!  I mean your arms and legs…now that the weather is warm and the sun is out.  Geez…what were YOU thinking?!

With the crazy long winter we had in Toronto, I’m pretty sure we built up some pretty thick layers of dead skin cells.  Am I right or am I right? Well, that’s definitely not attractive especially since our wardrobe will mainly consists of tanks, shorts, and dresses.

To help you get “summer-ready” and reveal softer version of yourself, Miraj Hammam Spa by Caudalie Paris is here to help with their signature Hammam & Gommage treatment.

Miraj Hammam Spa by Caudalie Paris is located inside one of my favourite hotels in Toronto, Shangri-La.  You may remember me praising Shangri-La after my Afternoon Tea experience there.

The Hammam & Gommage treatment costs $130CAD for 30mins.  Caudalie Paris adopted this authentic Middle Eastern tradition and really westernized it by offering a truly luxurious experience.  The treatment is split into two parts: steam (Hammam) and body exfoliation (Gommage) and the whole intent is to de-stress you and your body.

Upon entering the spa, located on the 5th floor, you are greeted by a staff member who takes you onto a tour of the facility.  So it’s recommended that you arrive 20mins prior to your appointment time.  The first thing I noticed as she was taking me on the tour, was the beautiful and intricate craftsmaneship in their decor as it reminded me of my travels to Morocco.

The last stop on our tour was the women’s change room where they have individual lockers with keys, showers, and a nicely stocked Caudalie Paris refresh station.  One thing I appreciated very much about this spa compared to most is that majority of the treatments offered are private.  So chances are you won’t be scheduled at the same time as someone else and have the change room to yourself.

Before the staff member left, I was given disposable undergarments and the softest robe ever.  Disposable undergarments are a must since you will be sweating up a storm in the steam room.

Shangri-La - Hammam 5

The only time I’ve been to a steam room was inside a sauna.  So when I entered this grand steam chamber covered in Jerusalem gold marble, my mind was absolutely blown.  This entire room was all mine…at least for the next 30mins.  There actually two parts to the grand steam chamber: high intensity steam chamber in the back and a low mist steam chamber in the front.

With a sarong wrapped around me, I was led into the high intensity steam chamber where I laid on the Jerusalem gold marble for 15 minutes to relax my body and mind.  The room smelled like eucalyptus which opened up my sinuses.  You wouldn’t think much of lying on a piece of marble, but I started to sweat buckets as the steam was detoxifying my body by opening up my pores.  After being drenched in sweat, I was escorted to the low mist steam chamber where I laid on my sarong and my body was thoroughly exfoliated using eucalyptus infused black Moroccan soap.  This treatment is not for the faint of heart as your body is exposed (thank goodness for disposable undergarments) and you are rubbed in places you never thought of before (i.e. armpits).  Because the steam had really softened up my skin, the exfoliation was not painful and just felt like someone was lightly buffing out my skin.  Not gonna lie, the sight of my dead skin was quite gross and reminded me of using Korean peeling gels.  After my body was rinsed, my skin felt so clean and soft like a baby’s bottom. No amount of at-home body exfoliators could achieve this kind of softness.

After the treatment, I was brought into the relaxation room which was beautifully decorated.  As I was lounging on the daybed, flipping through some magazines, I was served a Middle Eastern tea, baclava, and grapes.  At that moment, I felt like a princess (not to be confused with Princess Fiona as I was not green after the treatment).  Since most of the treatments are private, the chances of you crossing paths and sharing the lounge with another client is highly unlikely.  And the best part is that you can stay in the lounge as long as you like.

Unfortunately I couldn’t stay at the lounge for too long since I had a birthday dinner to attend to.  But thank goodness the washrooms were well equipped with showers, hair dryers, Caudalie Paris products, and the works.  Of course I had to take a selfie post-treatment and after freshening up.

The experience was absolutely magical and I’m so fortunate I got to try this.  You aren’t just paying for the treatment but rather the entire experience of the spa.  No detail was spared when creating this sanctuary and the staff were professional and accommodating.  I definitely recommend this treatment to people that want to shed all their dead skin to be “summer-ready” or those that just want to feel pampered.
