I first heard about this Food Friday restaurant from a co-worker.  She said she found this burger joint that served 100% angus beef that’s hormone-free and antibiotic-free.  After hearing about it…I just had to go.  If you follow me on Instagram, you will know which place I am talking about.

Along with serving 100% angus-beef, they also hand-bake organic-flour buns.  Talk about indulging in food that’s actually not that bad for you.

When you’re walking along Yonge St, Capitano won’t really strike you as anything special, but the minute you taste the food, it will make you wanting more.  That’s what happened after my first time.  I went on a weekly basis, taking friends to experience the deliciousness!

Not only does Capitano offer burgers made from beef, they also allow you to substitute any burger on their menu for chicken or fish.  Did I forget to mention that they have this wicked vegetarian option which is a mushroom melt burger?  Just read the menu and try not to salivate.

Each time I went, it was during lunch time and I actually forgot to bring my camera.  Feeling a bit guilty, I had to take a photo and post it on Instagram.

You might think the Fish Burger is like a McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish, but boy are you wrong!  This burger was massive and came with 3 fish patties inside…3!!  The fish came fresh out of the fryer, the homemade tartar sauce with the diced up pickles added a tangy flair, and the bun was oh so soft and perfectly toasted.  Just ordering the burger alone made me super full and it was hard not to fall asleep when returning to the office.

This is my favourite burger and the one that I’ve ordered way too many times.  Once you read a description of the Wild Burger, you will want it instantly.  Once you’ve eaten a hormone-free and antibiotic-free beef patty, you will understand why it’s worth to spend a few extra dollars.  You can really taste the natural flavour of the beef and it’s much more filling.  This burger is everything I envisioned a burger to have.  Roasted red peppers and the sautéed mushrooms added an earthiness to the dish and the creaminess of the goat cheese just elevated it.  It was perfectly balanced, especially with the caramelized onions.

When my dear friend, Phil, was briefly in town during his crazy 12 countries, 12 months, 12 martial arts tour, he requested if we could meet up at Capitano’s.  His request was granted!  After me constantly raving on how good the wild burger was, he had no choice but to order it and….he absolutely agreed with me!

It may seem like a bit of an odd combination…burgers and gelato?  But it works!  To go with the theme of “making their own food” and “using the freshest ingredients”, Capitano’s gelatos are also homemade!  They are crafted on-site using the freshest fruit, nuts, and diary products and don’t contain any additives or flavour enhancers.  I was impressed by how many flavours they house.  When ordering a small gelato, you actually get to choose two flavours!  It might be best to share with a friend because after eating one burger and a small gelato, you will definitely want to fall asleep or take a long walk.

I was really drawn to trying their gelatos when I saw mango.  I love mangos…it’s definitely my favourite fruit.  When restaurants offer mango ice cream or cake on their menu, I’m usually hesitant when trying it because it has this fabricated taste.  Not Capitano’s gelato.  Their mangos tasted like fresh Philippine mangoes.  It wasn’t too creamy nor too sweet.  It was perfect.  I also tried the mixed berry and it had the perfect amount of tartness.

If you are daring, give the Gelato Burger a try.  It’s scoops of gelato of your choice inside a sweet bun.

So the next time you’re walking along Yonge St., skip the McDonalds & froyo and head over to Capitano!  You won’t regret it!
